The Post & Courier: The William Moultrie a gin lover’s cocktail

What is it?

The William Moultrie is a cocktail on tap at The Obstinate Daughter featuring locally made Highwire Hat Trick Gin, freshly juiced cucumber water, grapefruit juice, key lime juice, simple syrup and soda water. The drink is garnished with basil picked from the restaurant’s herb garden. The basil is “slapped” to release its essential oils and provides a bit of theatrical flourish to entertain and amuse the guests.

Who’s buying it?

Gin lovers. Perfect after a day at the beach, it parlays refreshment, astringency and thirst-quenching properties.

What’s the story?

In the planning stages of opening The Obstinate Daughter, the team picked out several names that paid homage to the battle of Fort Sullivan in 1776. William Moultrie stood out because he played a major role in the American victory.

John Aquino, a five-time mojito master and winner of the Bacardi Challenge and award-winning mixologist, developed this cocktail for the bar menu. The William Moultrie reflects one of the hottest bar trends today because tap cocktails save time and money.

Who’s selling it?

Enjoy the William Moultrie at The Obstinate Daughter and try other tap cocktails at Indaco (the Negroni), and the punch menu (Dickensian and Chatruby Rye) at Edmund’s Oast.

Customer Melanie Dewolf reports on her first Moultrie: “Frank the bartender poured me this on Monday and I can’t stop thinking about it! The perfect apres beach cocktail!”
